After landing in Male, the Prime Minister’s office tweeted that PM Modi’s visit to the Maldives will help in “deepening connect with our valued maritime neighbor”. India also termed the visit as “Historic”. taking it to Facebook, PM Modi wrote, “I am delighted to visit Male, the capital of the Republic of Maldives, our close and friendly neighbor, to attend the historic Inauguration Ceremony of President-elect H.E. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.”
In September this year, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s candidate, defeated former president Abdulla Yameen to become the head of the island country. He had extended an invitation to PM Modi to attend his swearing-in ceremony. He was also invited by Modi to visit India.
The Maldives is the only SAARC nation PM Modi has not yet visited. Election of Ibrahim Solih had ushered hopes of strengthening of ties between New Delhi and Male.
