Post mortem report suggests murder in Payal Tadvi suicide;case transferred to crime branch

Mumbai | The Post-mortem reports of Dr Payal Tadvi, who was recently found dead in her hostel room, suggest that it could be murder after all.

Payal Tadvi, a student doctor at Nair Hospital in Mumbai, was believed to have committed suicide due to incessant harassment.

Three doctors, her seniors, are accused of mentally torturing her to the brink of suicide. A report by the anti-ragging committee confirmed that Tadvi was harassed on caste basis. All of them are in police custody till May 31.

Under ‘provisional cause of death’, the post-mortem report stated ‘evidence of ligature mark over the neck.’

“From the circumstances of her death and bruise mark on her body, we can say that it must be a case of murder and not of suicide. Police must investigate this case in the lines of a murder investigation. Police should be given 14 days time for that,” Nitin Satpute, counsel representing the deceased’s family, said.

“The accused had taken her body to some other place and later it was brought to hospital so there is a suspicion of tampering with the evidence,” Satpute alleged in court.

The case has been transferred to the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police on Thursday.
