Farmers’ leaders say that even if the Supreme Court puts a stay on the laws, the movement is not going to end.
New Delhi| The petitions challenging Agricultural laws were heard by the Supreme Court bench headed by CJI Bobde on Monday. While reprimanding the government, Chief Justice SA Bobde said that the government has completely failed to handle the issue. He also questioned why the government is hesitating to put a stay on agricultural laws for some time. The court in harsh words said that if the government does not put a stay on the laws, it will do so.
Supreme Court suggested the formation of a committee
At the hearing, the court also suggested that a committee may be constituted to review these laws. It also asked the Centre to not implement the laws until the report of the committee. However, lawyers appearing for the government opposed any stay on these laws. He argued that due to these laws coming into force in July, many farmers are already cultivating as per the contracts. In such a situation, those farmers will have to bear the loss.

A decision on this matter is expected today and it is believed that the court can order the stay on the enforcement of these laws at present. In such a situation, the question arises whether this step of the Supreme Court will end the ongoing farmers’ movement in Delhi?
‘Even if you withhold the law, the movement will not end’
Farmers’ leaders say that even if the Supreme Court puts a stay on the laws, the movement is not going to end. Issuing a press note in the late evening, the farmers’ leaders have also said that if the court sets up a committee, they will not be a part of it. Farmer leaders have taken this decision after discussion with their lawyers. Farmer leader Dr. Darshan Pal said after this meeting, “We respect the Supreme Court and welcome that the Supreme Court has asked to put a stay on the laws but we will not be a part of the committee suggested by the court.”
The decision was taken by Farmers’ leaders after a meeting with their lawyers Dushyant Dave, Prashant Bhushan, Colin Gonsalves and HS Phoolka.
“Not our decision to go to Court”
Further, about the nature of the movement, farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chadhuni says, “Even if there is a temporary ban on the laws, the movement will continue. We are not ready to return before the laws are completely repealed. We are not going to withdraw the agitation on the pretext of the committee. We respect the Supreme Court but there will be no change in the movement before the cancellation of the laws.”
Farmer leader Major Singh also said, “It was not our decision to go to the Supreme Court. We are not even a party. This is a direct fight with our government. Whatever we are asking for, we are asking directly from the government which has brought this law. There should be no Supreme Court or any other committee in it. This is not to say that we do not respect the court.”
