SC Declines To Quash FIR Against Arnab Goswami, No Transfer of Probe to CBI

Multiple FIRs were registered against Arnab Goswami concerning hate speech and promoting enmity between religious groups.

New Delhi: On Tuesday, the apex court declined to transfer the probe against Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami from the Maharashtra Police to the CBI.

FIRs have been filed against Goswami for hate speech, criminal defamation and promoting enmity between religious groups.

The bench also refused to quash the May 2 FIR registered against Goswami for allegedly hurting religious sentiments by derogatory remarks during discussions on his channel over the Palghar lynching incident.

The SC also ordered that no new FIR will be filed on the same broadcast, which allegedly defamed Gandhi, and granted Goswami the liberty to approach the appropriate court for quashing the remaining FIRs against him.

Editor-in-chief of Republic TV, Arnab Goswami, has been charged in connection with a TV show episode on the gathering of migrant workers outside Bandra railway station on April 14.

Some of the phrases used by Goswami during an episode about Bandra Migrant worker’s gathering: ‘Ab se thodi der pehle Mumbai ke Bandra me Jama Masjid Hai.’ Aur Is Jama Masjid Ke Pass Achanak Hazaro logo Ki Bheed Jama Hogae’.‘Mumbai ke Bandra me masjid Ke pass kisne bheed jutae.’Lockdown me har Bheed Masjid ke pass kyu Juti Hai?’

This apart, multiple FIRs have been registered against him for his show on Palghar lynching. In that show, he had posed certain questions on the incident to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, following which Congress workers lodged complaints against him in various states.

The apex court also extended Republic TV Chief’s protection from arrest for another three weeks, with orders to the Mumbai Police to give him security.
