New Delhi| Delhi Police chargesheet in Delhi riot case has named CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav, economist Jayati Ghosh, Delhi University professor Apoorvananda and documentary filmmaker Rahul Rai Police have said that these people are not accused, but another accused has named them in their statement.

According to the agency, Delhi riots accused Devangana Kalitha, Natasha Narwal and Gulfisha Fatima had named Yogendra, Jayati, Apoorvanand and Rahul Rai in their statements. These statements were taken in connection with the Jafrabad violence. According to the police, the violent riots that ravaged the city in February this year started from Zafarabad. All three have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

According to reports, Gulfisha Fatima in her statement said that the crowd had started growing at protest site. Former student leader Umar Khalid, Chandra Shekhar Ravan, Yogendra Yadav, Sitaram Yechury and lawyer Mahmood Pracha mobilized the crowd.

According to the charge sheet, these three stated, “Pracha said that it is your democratic right to perform. The rest of the leaders called the CAA and NRC anti-Muslim, fomenting discontent in the community.”

Sitaram Yechury attacked the central government after being named in the chargesheet. He tweeted, “There is video of poisonous speeches, why no action is being taken on them. The Delhi Police works under the BJP’s Central Government and the Home Ministry. Its illegal actions reflect the character of the BJP’s top leadership. They are afraid of opposition’s questions and peaceful demonstrations and want to stop us by misusing power.”

Yogendra Yadav tweeted,” This is factually incorrect. I have not been co-conspirator or accused in the supplementary charge sheet. The unconfirmed statement of the police has mentioned about me and Yechury based on the statement of an accused, which will not be acceptable in the court.”

Riots erupted on 24 February in north-east Delhi amid CAA protests. Close to 53 people were killed and left more than 200 people injured. The police have registered 751 FIRs in the Delhi riots case.
