Tamil Nadu rains 20 districts on red alert

Chennai: The weather department has said the downpour will continue till noon. Chennai is also likely to witness heavy rainfall in the evening. Incessant rainfall caused waterlogging in several parts of Chennai, resulting in traffic diversions and closure of subways — throwing life out of gear for the people.

By Wednesday evening, the intermittent and light rainfall that Tamil Nadu witnessed through the day had picked up pace and turned into a non-stop heavy shower in many parts of the state including Chennai and nearby Chengelpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Villupuram.

The rains are expected to continue in the state for at least the next two days, as a result of the formation of a depression over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system is likely to cross the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast by the evening of November 11.

Here are all the most important developments regarding the rains in Tamil Nadu.

Heavy rains on Wednesday

Various parts of Tamil Nadu, especially the northern districts, witnessed heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening.

“There is widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu. It intensified after 8 pm, especially in the northern regions,” a weather department official was quoted in a PTI report.

Depression formed

On Wednesday evening, the Indian Meteorological Department announced that the well-marked low pressure area over central parts of south Bay of Bengal had moved west-northwestwards and concentrated into a depression.ADVERTISEMENT

The weather system is likely to cross north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Karaikal and Sriharikota, close to the north of Puducherry, by the evening of November 11, the meteorological department said.

β€œIt [depression] lies about 430 kilometres east-southeast of Chennai and 420 km east-southeast of Puducherry. It is very likely to move westnorthwestwards and reach near north Tamil Nadu coast by the early morning of November 11. Thereafter, it is likely to cross the coast by the evening of November 11,” the department stated.

Forecast for Thursday

As a result of the formation of the depression, Tamil Nadu is likely to see rainfall for at least the next two days.

The rainfall is expected to be scattered, heavy, very heavy and extremely heavy in specific regions and light to moderate in most other places.

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep S Bedi said, “We’re expecting more than 250 mm of rain in and around Chennai over the next two days.”
