Third Exit From TMC In Two Days Ahead of Shah’s Visit Keeps Mamata Banerjee On Toes

In the latest jolt to Mamata Banerjee, TMC MLA Shilabhadra Dutta quit the party and the post. He is expected to join BJP in presence of Amit Shah.

 

Kolkata| Even as most parts of North India are witnessing a cold wave, the political temperature in West Bengal has risen. The BJP has been aggressively campaigning in the state in a hope to breach Mamata Banerjee’s citadel. The TMC Govt in the state is already at loggerheads with the Centre over the transfers of IPS officers. If the pressure from the BJP was not enough, the Party is also dealing with the internal rebellion.

In the latest jolt to Mamata Banerjee, TMC MLA Shilabhadra Dutta quit the party and the post. The rebellion comes on the heels of two TMC leaders- Suvendu Adhikari and Jitendra Tiwari already resigning from the party. The three exits in just last two days marks significance as Home Minister Amit Shah will be visiting Bengal this week. It is speculated that these leaders will join the saffron party in presence of Shah.

Talks with Shilbhadra Dutta Fail

According to reports, Shilbhadra Dutta had earlier said that he will not contest elections this time. After his statement, officials of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) went to meet him. However, the talks failed. The TMC made another attempt to resolve the issues by sending party’s North 24 Parganas district president to Dutta’s residence, but he was not present at that moment.

Suvendu Adhikari Resigns

Suvendu Adhikari, a senior leader from Nandigram was said to be the key force behind the Movement that catapulted West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to power in 2011. It is said that Adhikari played a key role in getting Banerjee re-elected for the second term in 2016. He is said to have control over local leaders in more than 50 seats in the western part of the state. Adhikari was reportedly unhappy over the rise of Banerjee’s Nephew Abhishek in the party.
