Twitter Unlocks Rahul Gandhi, Congress Accounts After Intense Protest By Grand Old Party

This move by Twitter came a day after Mr Gandhi lashed out at the social media giant for interfering in India’s political process.

A week after the micro-blogging website temporarily suspended their accounts for tweeting pictures of the family of a nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in Northwest Delhi, Twitter on Saturday restored Rahul Gandhi’s account, along with that of the Congress and its other leaders. This move by Twitter came a day after Mr Gandhi lashed out at the social media giant for interfering in India’s political process.

Congress in-charge of social media accounts, Rohan Gupta, told NDTV: “All Congress accounts have been unlocked. No reason has been given by Twitter for the unlocking.”

The first tweet by the official account of Congress, after being unlocked, read: “Satyamev Jayate (Truth Alone Triumphs)”.

Earlier on Friday, in a video message, Rahul Gandhi had slammed Twitter and warned that the move by social media platform would have repercussions.

“This is an attack on the democratic structure of the country. This is not an attack on Rahul Gandhi. It is not just a matter of silencing my voice but of silencing millions of people,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“As a politician I do not like such things. This is an attack on the democratic structure of the country. This is not an attack on Rahul Gandhi alone. It is not just a matter of silencing Rahul Gandhi. I had around 19 to 20 million followers and you are preventing them from expressing their opinion,” the former Congress President added.

Rahul Gandhi said, “With this move, Twitter has proved that it is not a neutral platform. This is a dangerous thing for investors because taking someone’s side in a political contest can have the wrong outcome for Twitter.”
