US Protests: Statue of Mahatma Gandhi In Washington DC Vandalised

Meanwhile, Ken Juster, US Envoy to India has condemned the vandalism of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi. He said that he is appalled at the awful violence and vandalism.

 

Washington DC| Amidst the streak of violent protests in the US, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside the Indian Embassy has been desecrated. The vandalised statue has now been covered. Looting, Arson and chaos have taken over the streets of Washington DC after the killing of 46-year-old African American George Floyd by a white cop in Minneapolis.

Officials said that the United States Park Police have launched an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Ken Juster, US Envoy to India has condemned the vandalism. He said that he is appalled at the awful violence and vandalism. “We stand against prejudice and discrimination of any type. We will recover & be better (SIC),” He wrote in his tweet.

On May 25, George Floyd was caught with a counterfeit of $20. The police took him in custody. However, moments later one of the policemen Derek Chauvin laid him on the ground and knelt on his neck. The video of the incident was captured by several passers-by. The video shows unarmed Floyd asking to let him go and saying “I can’t breathe.” However, the policeman did not listen and kept his knee on his neck for almost 7 minutes.

Floyd fell unconscious and on his way to the hospital was declared dead. In his autopsy, it was revealed that his death was caused due to asphyxia and it was termed as “Homicide”.

Meanwhile, the policeman has been charged with third-degree murder and more stringent charges are expected to be levied on him.
