After Violence In National Capital, HM Amit Shah Holds Meeting To Discuss Security

According to sources, the meeting could lead to big decisions on security and the possibility of paramilitary deployment cannot be ruled out.

After violent farmer protests that even reached the Red Fort, union Home Minister Amit Shah held meeting with top security and police officers today to discuss and review security.

In the high-level meeting, home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and Delhi Police Commissioner SN Srivastava were present.

After thousands of farmers breached barricades at the borders and deviated from agreed routes to reach the heart of national capital, the Home Minister, who’s in charge of law and order in the city, was briefed on the clashes that erupted today in various parts of Delhi.

According to sources, the meeting could lead to big decisions on security and the possibility of paramilitary deployment cannot be ruled out.

Earlier in the day, deviating from pre-designated routes for the parade, a group of protesting farmers reached Red Fort on tractors. A protestor hoisted a flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

Clashes were reported from the ITO area of Delhi, where farmers and police tried overpowering each other, with police using lathi charge to control the crowd. A DTC bus was reportedly vandalised by protesting farmers at ITO in central Delhi.

Protesters broke barricade, attacked police personnel and vandalised police vehicle at ITO in central Delhi, according to news agency ANI.

Following the violence, internet services have been temporarily suspended in some parts of Delhi and adjoining areas.

People residing in these areas uploaded screenshots on social media platforms of a text message they received on their mobile phones. “As per government instructions, Internet services have been stopped in your area till further notice,” the text message read.

News agency ANI quoted Union Home Ministry sources as saying that the Internet has been shut at areas near the Singhu border – the epicentre of farmers’ protest against the three agriculture laws, Ghazipur, Tikri, Mukarba Chowk, Nangloi of the national capital till 23:59 hrs on January 26.
