A massive fire broke out at Jamrushi Nagar a slum near Kurar Village in Malad on Monday. The fire personnel is at the spot, fighting the blaze, reported Mid-Day.
“The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained. No casualty reported so far,” officials said. The Mumbai Fire Brigade has declared it as a Level 2 fire. The fire is confined to 50-100 hutments, as per BMC officials. Further details are awaited”.
Months ago HW News Network visited the hamlet to understand the plight of the slum dwellers who were entitled to get a pucca house for a decade. This slum is home to more than 10,000 slum dwellers. The Marathi-dominated hamlet is less than 10 minutes away from the western express highway and and 14 minutes away from the SGNP.

The roads leading up to the slum indicate that one is now entering the slum symbolic to the situation faced by many of its residents. Apart from bad roads, the residents struggle to get basic necessities like water, and electricity. The women of Jamrushi Nagar have to get out of their houses and wait for an hour daily to store enough water for their basic needs.
