Delhi Police spineless, Mahua Moitra said after comedian Munawar Faruqui’s event in Delhi scheduled on August 28 was denied permission.

Mumbai: In response to reports of Delhi police not granting permission to Munawar Faruqui for his event in the national capital, which was initially planned to take place on August 28, TMC MP Mahua Moitra referred to the Delhi Police as “spineless.”

Mahua took to Twitter saying, “Gandhiji said, ‘I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed’. Is India@75’s communal harmony so fragile today that it is disrupted by comedy show?”

The licencing unit of the Delhi Police denied the licence after VHP filed a letter to the Delhi Police objecting to the event and forewarning of protests, the Lok Sabha MP claimed, citing Mahatma Gandhi and the 75 years of India’s freedom. According to a report from the central district police, Munawar Faruqui’s performance will “impact communal harmony in the area.”

Munawar Faruqui is once again making headlines after his recent performance in Hyderabad sparked a political brawl that resulted in the suspension of T Raja Singh, the leader of the Telangana BJP. The BJP leader threatened to burn down the venue if Munawar Faruqui’s event was permitted to go on as scheduled on August 20 in Hyderabad. Raja Singh released  a video the following day in which he made insulting remarks about the Prophet, whereas Munawar’s “Dongri to Nowhere” was peacefully held under strict protection. People protested his remarks and demanded his arrest, which led to unrest in Hyderabad. On Thursday T Raja was arrested. Meanwhile, the party has suspended him for his comments on the Prophet.

Prior to Munawar’s performance in Hyderabad, his Bengaluru performance was cancelled due to Hindu organisations’ objections, despite the comic gave health-related excuses for the postponement. In 2021, Munawar was arrested from a show in Madhya Pradesh on charges of insulting Hindu gods in his jokes.
