A cheap, crass and vulgar remark that came out as a joke is now being discussed in the parliament. Till now, you all might have already heard about YouTuber and Podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia’s Obscene joke, which has ignited a massive and heated debate on social media. On Tuesday a team of Versova police reached the Mumbai residence of podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as the BeerBiceps Guy.

The Mumbai Police summoned Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina for questioning in connection with the ongoing India’s Got Latent controversy. They were asked to appear before investigating officers and cooperate in the investigation. However, no date was specified for their appearance.
Mumbai Police DCP Diskhit Gedam stated, “An inquiry has been launched after receiving multiple complaints. A case has been registered against Allahbadia, Raina, the show’s organisers, YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani and social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, popularly known as The Rebel Kid, who also participated in the episode”.

Mumbai police filed an FIR based on a complaint lodged by activist Rahul Easwar with the Mumbai Commissioner and Maharashtra Women’s Commission.
An FIR was also filed in Assam against Ranveer Allahbadia and fellow judges on the show’s panel. In a post on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the FIR was filed against them “for promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussion on the show.”

Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske raised the issue in Parliament. He said the government should evolve guidelines for content on such programmes on social media and OTT platforms.
Furthermore, Vijaya Rahatkar, the Chairperson of the Nation Women’s Commission, wrote a letter to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In it, she stressed the need to enforce stringent censorship and content moderation systems.

The Commission in the letter highlighted “violation of multiple legal provisions, including the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act, among others. Such content not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also poses a direct threat to the safety and dignity of women and children.”

This comes after a Parliamentary panel on information technology discussed summoning Allahbadia. Following the discussion, a notice was issued to Allahbadia and Raina requesting their appearance before the panel to answer questions linked to the row.
Meanwhile, other social media influencers and netizens have strongly condemned the act. public outrage. Reports also suggest that following the controversy, there was a significant drop in Allahabadia’s followers. He has lost 25,000 followers on Instagram and over 40,000 subscribers on YouTube. Allahbadia has 10.5 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, BeerBiceps, and 4.5 million followers on Instagram.

B Praak, a popular singer, cancelled his podcast appearance on Allahabadi’s show. In a post on X he wrote: “I was supposed to appear on a podcast, on Beer Biceps, and we cancelled that. Why? Since we are all seeing how pathetic his thinking is. The choice of words that he has used on Samay Raina’s show.” “This is not our Indian culture.”
Not only that, but the top brands once associated with Allahabadia are now questioning their choice. These brands include Spotify, Mountain Dew, Amazon Prime Video, Intel, and Wow Skin Science.
According to reports, these brands have not issued official statements. However, past incidents suggest that “companies tend to distance themselves when influencers find themselves at the centre of controversy.”

The show was uploaded on Samay Raina’s YouTube channel for Subscribed viewers only. However, the video’s outrageous content went viral on social media. Many social media users uploaded multiple clips of the video, questioning the limits of the panel’s jokes and criticizing their remarks.
Youtuber Ranveer Allahabadia is popularly known for his YouTube channel, BeerBiceps.
Allahabadia appeared as a panellist in the latest episode of Latent. During the show, he made derogatory, Vulgar and lewd questions to a contestant. Allahabadia questioned the contestant over “parental intercourse”.

The question triggered an immediate backlash, with many demanding stricter regulations on online content. Last year, PM Modi awarded Ranveer Allahabadia the National Creator Awards at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital. Now, everyone is criticising and condemning Allahabadia’s remarks, but this is the same guy the BJP government chose to award him the National Creator Award.
Furthermore, Kanchan Gupta, a senior advisor to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcast also took the matter on his X handle. He wrote: “The ‘India Got Latent’ episode on YouTube with obscene and perverse comments by Ranveer Allahbadia has been blocked following Government of India orders.”

Gupta also posted a screenshot from the episode on YouTube with the text: “Video unavailable… This content is not available on the country domain due to a legal complaint from the government.”
Following the trouble, Allahabadia issued a public apology. In a video message, he said, “My comment wasn’t just inappropriate; it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I’m just here to say sorry.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday hinted at action against the YouTuber. He said, “Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others”.
“There should be a dignified way of expressing ourselves. In our society, there are rules against obscenity. It is very wrong for someone to violate those rules, and action should be taken against the violators”.

Joining the fray, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT), also condemned the incident. In a post on X she wrote: “Any abusive language in the name of comedy content crosses limits is not acceptable. You get a platform, but that doesn’t mean that you will utter anything. He is someone with millions of subscribers, every political has sat in his podcast. PM has given him an award… As a member of the standing committee of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, I will raise this issue”.

Furthermore, the All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) on Tuesday demanded a ban on the show India’s Got Latent. They cited the show’s use of unfiltered language and inappropriate words as ‘disrespectful to our societal and family values’.
AICWA stated, “We call upon all actors, filmmakers, directors, and technicians to immediately cease collaborating with individuals involved in this show, including host Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia.”

Amidst this, popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee also joined in. Dhruv Rathee, in a post, said, “I’ve always been strongly against abusive and vulgar language. In the 1000+ videos, shorts and reels that I have made, you won’t find a single abusive word for anyone. What is being done today in the name of dank comedy is pure nonsense. The only purpose is to shock and disgust audiences for views, which is having a disastrous impact on the moral development of our youth”.

Lyricist and poet Manoj Muntashir issued an urgent warning to parents, urging them to wake up before witnessing the catastrophic downfall of both their children and the nation. He called on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (@MIB_India) to take immediate action against everyone present on the panel of the show.
