Redefined Terrorism, Revised Punishment For Mob Lynching

This week, the government unveiled modified editions of three criminal law bills initially presented in August. These updated drafts, incorporating recommendations from a parliamentary panel, aim to replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act. The updated legislation now mandates a minimum penalty of life imprisonment, while the maximum punishment is death. This adjustment is believed to have been made to equate the consequences for offenses such as mob lynching with those for acts like murder.

The attack occurred during a raid at Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikhโ€™s residence, related to an alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam. The arrested individuals, Mehbur Mollah and Sukalam Sarkar had fled the village after the attack and were hiding.
