SC declines to transfer minister Ajay Mishra Teniโ€™s case from Allahabad HCโ€™s Lucknow bench

SC

A bench of Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi asked Mishra to make a request before the HC to let the senior counsel, representing him, appear through video-conferencing if he is unable to come down to Lucknow

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has declined a plea of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni seeking to transfer the Uttar Pradesh governmentโ€™s appeal challenging his acquittal in a 22-year-old murder case from High Courtโ€™s Lucknow bench to the Allahabad bench.

A bench of Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi asked Mishra to make a request before the High Court to let the senior counsel, representing him, appear through video-conferencing if he is unable to come down to Lucknow. โ€œIn case the senior counsel is unable to come down to Lucknow, a request for allowing said counsel to make submissions through video-conferencing may be considered by the High Court,โ€ the bench stated in its order.

Mishra had approached the apex court while challenging the High Court order which rejected his request to transfer the governmentโ€™s appeal from the Lucknow bench to the Allahabad bench.
Union Minister of State for Home had sought the transfer on the ground that the senior counsel representing him was ordinarily based in Allahabad and because of his old age, it would not be possible for him to go all the way to Lucknow for arguments.

As per the case, Mishra is accused of killing a local entrepreneur, Prabhat Gupta, over a business rivalry in Tikunia town of Uttar Pradesh in July 2000.

In 2004, he was acquitted by the trial court and challenging that order, the Uttar Pradesh government approached the High Court in 2004.

The matter is still pending in the High Court.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, praised Jaishankar during a conference at a Delhi-based think tank, he had virtually joined union ministers from India and several parliamentarians

New Delhi: Omar Sultan Al Olama, the UAEโ€™s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, on Wednesday lauded External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, saying he is impressed by how he positions Indiaโ€™s foreign policy at the world stage amid geopolitical tugs of war.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, praised Jaishankar during a conference at a Delhi-based think tank. He had virtually joined union ministers from India and several parliamentarians. โ€œHistorically, the world was unipolar, bipolar or tripolar, where you had to choose sides. I am very impressed by your minister of foreign affairs โ€” I see some of his speeches. One thing is very clear for both UAE and India is that we donโ€™t need to choose sides,โ€ Omar Sultan Al Olama said, in response to a question about how he deals with the geopolitical headwinds.
โ€œAt the end, geopolitics is determined by best interest of certain parties. โ€ฆThe model that existed historically is unfortunately no longer here. Today a country needs to think about its best interests,โ€ he added.

He said if UAE works with India, it doesnโ€™t mean it cannot work with the United States. โ€œThe three of us can work together. I2U2 (India-Israel-UAE-USA) Group is a great example.โ€

Emphasizing the importance of trade and investment, he said now is the time to dominate the world through commerce, and countries like India and the UAE can work together to substantially increase their footprint across the world.

โ€œThe way to dominate the world today is through commerce. If countries like India and the UAE can work together, we can substantially increase our footprint in the world,โ€ Olama, in his video interaction.

Olama said that there are ingrained roots between India and the UAE and multiple possible areas for cooperation, particularly in collaboration between startups in both countries.

The United Arab Emirates minister made the remarks while virtually speaking at the event called CyFY2022. A three-day conference organised by Observer Research Foundation (ORF) here in the national capital to discuss technology, security and society commenced on Wednesday.

Over the next three days, over 28-panel discussions, including 150 speakers and Q&A sessions from 37 countries will be held during the conference called CyFy 2022.
