A significant portion of sea traffic will return to India with the establishment of the Vizhinjam seaport
On Friday, Prime Minister Modi commissioned the Vizhinjam International Seaport. This will boost Indiaโs future in maritime trade and place Kerala on the global trade map.
โThe Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala is a significant advancement in Indiaโs maritime infrastructure,โ Modi said at the event.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) is the largest port developer in India. So it is also a subsidiary of the Adani Group. They developed the port in the Thiruvananthapuram district. The position of India is set to get significantly enhanced through this project. This is in the field of global trade and shipping and is through a public-private partnership.

The project finalized with an estimated investment of Rs 8,867 crore and received its commercial commissioning certificate. This was on December 4 of 2024 after a successful trial run.
Vizhinjam stands as Indiaโs inaugural dedicated transhipment port and the first semi-automated port in the nation.
Naturally deep waters which perfectly accomodate large cargo vessels are part of Vizhinjam seaport and is situated just 10 nautical miles from a vital international shipping lane.
Historically, Colombo Port in Sri Lanka processed about 75 percent of Indiaโs transshipment containers. As a result of this it led to substantial losses in foreign exchange and revenue.
With the establishment of Vizhinjam, India plans to redirect a significant portion of that traffic back to its shores.
