Bangalore: Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai defended the government’s move of painting thousands of school classrooms with saffron color. The schools with saffron color will be constructed under the newly launched ‘Viveka’ scheme. This decision by the government has sparked a row. The opposition parties accuse the ruling BJP of trying to saffronize the education system.

The BJP responded by stating that the school classrooms will be built in honor of Swami Vivekananda, who wore a saffron robe, thus this color is chosen.

The scheme is named ‘Viveka’ after Swami Vivekananda. The Karnataka government has proposed constructing 7,601 classrooms across the state.

CM Bommai launched the scheme on Children’s Day. He laid the foundation stone in Government Higher Primary School at Madiyal in Kalaburagi district.

“The government schools and colleges are run by taxpayers’ money and the education minister has no business to confine it to one religion. He’s trying to polarise and communalize the education in the state that is not acceptable,” Congress leader BK Hariprasad said.

BJP has said that the opposition is trying to play politics here.

“There is saffron color in our National Flag. Why they are angry about the saffron color? The school buildings are constructed in the name of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda was a monk. He wore saffron robes. The word Viveka means knowledge for one and all. Let them learn,” Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

On being questioned about the color code sparking controversy CM Bommai replied, “What’s wrong to have saffron color? There’s saffron color in the (national) tricolor. Swami Vivekananda himself used to wear saffron robe”.

“They (Congress) aren’t interested in the comprehensive development of education,” CM Bommai charged.

Sharing his opinion on naming the schools after Swami Vivekananda, he said, “Naming schools after Swami Vivekananda will help children draw inspiration from him and a good atmosphere will be created in schools.”
