New Delhi | Congress President Rahul Gandhi after the massive Lok Sabha defeat had offered his resignation to the Congress Working Committee(CWC), the highest decision-making body in the party, only to be refused.
While the blame has not been concentrated on Rahul Gandhi, he took the moral responsibility for the loss.
New reports have come in that despite the committee rejecting his offer to step down from the post, Rahul Gandhi still is insisting on the move.
During the day, party treasurer Ahmed Patel and general secretary K. C. Venugopal met Rahul and tried to persuade him not to press for his exit from the post. However, Ahmed Patel later clarified that he had gone to discuss routine administrative issues.
“I had sought time before the CWC to meet the Congress President to discuss routine administrative work. The meeting today was in that context. All other speculation is incorrect and baseless,” Patel tweeted.
New names are coming up for Gandhi’s replacement. He has dismissed a few leaders names who over allegedly concentrating more on their son’s ticket than the party’s.
AK Antony: He has previously been a Defence Minister for 8 years, and the longest serving Chief Minister of Kerala. During his tenure as a Chief Minister, he has introduced several important laws. He is a close aide of the Gandhi family. After the 2014 Lok Sabha loss, Anthony chaired a 4 member panel and submitted the Anthony report which stated that fighting the polls on a ‘secularism versus communalism’ plank hurt the Congress that was identified as pro-minority, resulting in substantial electoral gains for the BJP.
Jyotiraditya Scindia: Being born into a royal family, Jyotiraditya Scindia is one of the youngest men in politics currently. His father, Madhavrao Scindia was a popular Congress leader, and a grandson of Gwalior’s monarch. Scindia along with KamalNath guided the Congress party to victory in the 2018 Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls. However, he lost the 2019 Lok Sabha from Guna constituency after being an MP form the same constituency from 2002.
Ashok Gehlot: Gehlot is currently serving as the chief minister of rajasthan. He is former Congress party’s national general secretary and also in-charge of organizations and training from March 2018 to 23 January 2019. His proximity to Rajiv Gandhi perhaps helped Gehlot strike a rapport with Sonia Gandhi and subsequently with Rahul Gandhi too. Well, The Rajasthan Congress, which failed to win even one of the state’s 25 Lok Sabha seats, is battling an internal crisis. While two of its ministers have demanded accountability, there have been reports that one minister is on his way out, citing the party’s dismal performance. The crisis comes amid Rahul Gandhi’s tough talk on Saturday about senior leaders and Chief Ministers who fielded their sons in the election and confined themselves to their campaign, instead of working for the party campaign across the states. Which can now be a huge drawback for the Gehlot family within the Congress party.
Ahmed Patel: Just the way Amit Shah and Smriti Irani are useful for BJP, the same way Ahmad Patel is for Congress. Patel is considered to be one of the last powerful knights of the Congress that stand between the party and its total annihilation. Ahmed Patel has been in the Rajya Sabha for the last 25 years. He has been as immovable as a rock and represents the entirety of the Congress’s might in Gujarat. Having been with the party since Rajiv Gandhi’s time, he is among the top five leaders in the party today. Also, he is a close aide of Sonia Gandhi that can be big pros for him. And cons, being a strong and senior leader Ahmed Patel does not have a good rapport with the grassroots leaders.
Mallikarjun Kharge: Mallikarjuna charge has been Congress MP, MLA multiple times from last 45 years and he has always won from the reserved constituency from Karnataka and the main opposition leader in Lok sabha. He is the former Minister of Railways in the Government of India. He is also considered as a competent leader with a clean public image and well versed in the dynamics of politics, legislation and administration. He is also one of the senior leaders of the grand old party, that can make him a possible candidate to be the next Congress president.
Sachin Pilot: He is currently the Deputy CM of Rajasthan, and was being heavily considered for the post of CM. Under his leadership, the Congres party defeated the BJP in the 2018 assembly polls in Rajasthan. He was the youngest member in Parliament when he was elected from Dausa in 2014.
Amarinder Singh: Currently the Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh is lauded for his honest work and statements. Some say that he has successfully used his army background against Prime Minister Modi’s nationalism. Congress has done comparatively well in Punjab, securing 13 seats, Singh has been credited for it.
