“You are asking the wrong minister, ask Pakistan ministers, how long they intend to practice terrorism,” says S Jaishankar to a terrorism question at the UNSC

New York: S Jaishankar presided over a UNSC briefing on counter Terrorism, and discussed possible challenges and the way forward. He described terrorism as an existential threat to international peace and security.

He was responding to a question by a Pakistani journalist on how long South Asia is going to see terrorism disseminating from New Delhi, Kabul, and Pakistan at the UN, the minister told a reporter that he was directing his question to the wrong minister and suggested the journalist go back and ask Pakistan ministers the same question. “Ask Pakistan how long they intend to practice terrorism.”

Additionally, the foreign minister Jaishankar termed Pakistan as the “epicenter of Terrorism”

Nonetheless, S Jaishankar said, “Do not try and take the debate elsewhere, the world is not stupid, the world is not forgetful and by the end of the day the world calls out on countries that practice terrorism.” The remarks were directed at Pakistan.

Furthermore, Jaishankar suggested Pakistan, “Please clean up your act, please try and be a good neighbor and please try and contribute to what the rest of the world is trying to do today.”

He invoked US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who at a joint news conference in 2011 with then Pakistan Foreign Minister Khar, said: “You can’t keep snakes in your backyard and expect them only to bite your neighbours.”  Eventually, they will bite the people who keep them in the backyard. But as you know, Pakistan is not great on taking good advice. You see what’s happening there,” he said.

“Please try and contribute to what the rest of the world is trying to do today, which is economic growth, and progress and development,” Mr Jaishankar said.
