Bihar CM Nitish Kumar defends alcohol prohibition, says ready to face consequences

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday declared that the government had to discuss a bunch of changes that could be made to the alcohol prohibition law in consultation with top lawyer Gopal Subramaniam. “Bihar’s tough prohibition law could be tweaked soon to address concerns that government officials abused its provisions,” he added.

The changes in the decision have come after the state government faced a lot of criticism from the opposition parties after a large number of people were arrested in the state for violating the ban of possessing or consuming alcohol. According to sources, the state government is also thinking to make most offences bailable unless the suspect is a repeat offender.

The current prohibition law states that the suspect will have to spend time in jail because the offence has been classified as non-bailable. This means that the suspect cannot seek bail as a matter of right but a court gets to exercise its discretion.

Addressing an event Nitish Kumar said that “there had been complaints of misuse of the prohibition law and allegations of involvement of those in the government machinery, this problem too would be solved after a review being carried out.” “Yes, people are criticising, but I am willing to face all the criticism and consequences of my actions,” added Kumar.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday went to the CBI headquarters for questioning regarding foreign investment clearances given to INX media during his tenure.

The agency had alleged irregularities in the clearance of foreign investment in INX media, a venture promoted by former media baron Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani, sources said.

Chidambaram’s alleged role came under the scanner of investigating agencies in connection with the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance of Rs 305 crore.

The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15 last year for alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the finance minister during the UPA-1 government.

Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram was also arrested in the case for allegedly receiving funds to the tune of Rs 10 lakh.

The other accused in the case include then INX media director Indrani Mukerjea and then INX news director Peter Mukerjea, both in jail for alleged murder of their 24-year old daughter Sheena Bora.
