INX Media case: ED team to question P chidambaram in Tihar jail

Advocate General Tushar Mehta on behalf of ED sought permission to interrogate Chidambaram in the court premises, but Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal objected to it.

 

New Delhi: The special court of Delhi allowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to question and arrest the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram. The court has also given ED the option of questioning Chidambaram for 30 minutes. The ED sought permission to arrest Chidambaram for money laundering in the INX Media case.

On Monday, the special court reserved the verdict on the ED’s petition to arrest Chidambaram. Advocate General Tushar Mehta on behalf of ED sought permission to interrogate Chidambaram in the court premises, but Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal objected to it. Now ED will interrogate Chidambaram in Tihar Jail tomorrow.

Earlier, Chidambaram had filed a bail plea in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. On behalf of Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the court that the former finance minister or any member of his family was accused of influencing or approaching witnesses in the case is not true. Lawyers said in court that someone wants to keep Chidambaram in jail for humiliating him. Tusshar Mehta will present his arguments on behalf of the CBI in this matter on Wednesday.

Chidambaram’s lawyers also questioned the Delhi court’s order dismissing Chidambaram’s bail plea before the Supreme Court. On September 30, the court ordered his detention for the third time. Chidambaram’s judicial custody is scheduled to end on October 17.

Chidambaram was arrested by CBI on 21 August

Former Finance Minister Chidambaram is lodged in Tihar Jail facing corruption charges in INX Media case. Chidambaram is accused of misusing the post and taking bribes to sanction foreign investment. Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI from his house on 21 August. Chidambaram has since been sent to jail in judicial custody.
