The fast politics: BJP leaders stage a nation-wide protest; Congress calls it “Farsical”

Taking a dig at the BJP leaders’ day-long fast, opposition Congress said it is nothing more than a photo-op event. Congress Spokesperson even termed it a ‘Farcical Fast’.

Three days after the Congress staged a day-long hunger strike to protest the Dalit Atrocities, BJP too has followed the lines and is observing a day-long fast to protest the parliament impasse.

BJP leaders from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are observing a day-long fast in the different parts of the country. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to continue his schedule of attending the Defence Expo going on at Chennai, Party president Amit Shah will be participating in the sit-in Dharna at Hubbali in Karnataka.

In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Mumbai BJP President Ashish Shelar and BJP MP Paresh Rawal is attending the day-long fast. While Railway Minister Piyush Goyal too will be observing the fast at Thane, Union Health Minister J P Nadda is fasting in PM Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi.

However, opposition Congress dubbed it nothing more than a photo-op event. Congress president Rahul Gandhi launched a stinging attack on Prime Minister Modi. Gandhi tweeted, “The harassment of father demanding justice for his daughter in Uttar Pradesh has shamed the entire humanity.” Taking a jibe at the Prime Minister’s fasting, he said, “I hope Prime Minister Modi will soon observe a hunger strike for increasing atrocities on women, failing law& order under the BJP regime.”

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala accused the government of diverting the attention by staging a drama. Calling the fast by BJP leaders as ‘farcical’, Surjewala said, “BJP did not let the parliament function when it was in opposition. Now that it is the ruling party, it is still not letting the parliament function properly.”
