Gandhi Jayanti: “Rural India has declared itself Open Defecation Free,” says PM Modi at Sabarmati Ashram

PM Modi said that today rural India and villages have declared themselves free from open defecation. This is also the success of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

 

New Delhi| Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Gujarat on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. In the evening, he went to Sabarmati Ashram and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking at Sabarmati, PM Modi said that Mahatma Gandhi wanted to encourage self-reliance and empowerment of the village, the poor and women. This was at the core of Gandhiji’s self-rule, for which he dedicated his life.

PM Modi said that the world is surprised by India’s success today. “Today the whole world is rewarding us for this. The world is shocked to hear that more than 60 crore population is provided with toilet facilities in 60 months, with the construction of more than 11 crore toilets,” he said.

PM Modi said that today rural India and villages have declared themselves free from open defecation. This is also the power and the source of success of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, voluntarily, self-motivated and with public participation.

From Ahmedabad, PM Modi said that India’s stature is growing globally. “The honour of the whole of India is increasing. We can experience change. The world can see that India is at the forefront of many positive changes happening globally. Will declare the country free from open defecation. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced the release of 158 prisoners,” Modi said.
