BS Yediyurappa to face floor test today

Bengaluru | Just within a week the Karnataka Legislative Assembly will witness another Chief Minister proving his majority on the floor. BS Yediyurappa who took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Friday after the Congress-JDS lost the trust vote 99-105 in the assembly will try to prove his majority.

The confidence motion would be a simpler task for Yediyurappa after Karnataka assembly speaker K R Ramesh Kumar on Sunday disqualified 14 more rebel MLAs under the anti-defection act till the end of the current term of the assembly in 2023.

The move led to the total number of disqualified MLAs to 17 reducing the assembly strength to 2018. So BS Yediyurappa with 105 MLAs in his bank will be able to pass the confidence motion in the assembly as the majority mark is now reduced 105.

Earlier senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah said the government of the BJP in Karnataka was not “constitutionally or ethically formed” and called it “a victory of horsetrading.” Siddaramaiah, who is the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, accused the BJP of “misusing” the office of governor to form the government.

The HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) government in the state fell on Tuesday after it lost the confidence vote, garnering 99 votes against the 105 by the BJP in the assembly.

The coalition needed 103 votes in its favour to win the motion as 20 MLAs Congress-JDS (17), BSP (1), Independents (2) skipped the proceedings, reducing the effective strength of the House to 205.
