Mumbaikars hold candlelight vigil against NE Delhi violence, Police detains protesters

An intense communal riot-like situation had erupted in 10 districts in NE Delhi on 24 February. At least 7 people, including 1 policeman have been killed.

Mumbai| The candlelight vigil against the communal riots in NE Delhi was initially planned at Gateway of India was forced to relocate to Marine Drive on Monday night after the police barricaded the former site and prohibited entry of people

According to the official, police personnel were deployed in large numbers around the iconic monument, located across the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in south Mumbai, and barricades put up at nearby roads to restrict the movement of people and vehicles.

The protesters were detained by Mumbai Police, a few protesters were dragged and it is alleged
that police used force on the protesters.

The police threatened to file an FIR against the protesters if they did not vacate the premises.

Policemen claimed it was an unlawful assembly. However, the protesters were freed after an hour of the detainment.

Riotes intensified in NE Delhi in Jaffrabad area on Sunday and spiralled in nearby areas, including Bhajanpura, Chandbagh, Yamuna Vihar and Maujpur where pro-and-anti-CAA protests turned violent on Monday, leading to the death of seven people, including a head constable, injuries to over 150 others, according to officials.

Police had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. One police constable was killed during the clashes.
