NC-Congress alliance finalised in J&K; Farooq Abdullah to contest from Sringar

New Delhi | The alliance between National Conference and Congress party has been finalised for the upcoming Lok Sabha in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Congress party will contest from Jammu and Udhampur while the National Conference will contest from Srinagar, the decision on Ladakh seat is yet to be finalised. Intrestingly both the parties will contest on the Anantnag and Baramulla seat.

Addressing a press conference on the alliance with the Congress party, National Conference chairman Farooq Abdullah said,” Jammu and Udhampur will be contested by Congress, I will contest from Srinagar and there will be a friendly contest between NC and Congress in Anantnag and Baramulla. We are also discussing the Ladakh seat.”

The National Conference parliamentary board had on Monday had decided to field party president Farooq Abdullah from the Srinagar-Budgam constituency, former Jammu and Kashmir High Court judge Justice (retd) Hasnain Masoodi, known for his landmark judgement on Article 370, from the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency and senior leader and former Speaker of the state assembly Muhammad Akbar Lone from the Baramulla-Kupwara Lok Sabha constituency.

Congress senior leader and former Jammu and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad clarifying the term friendly contest on the Anantnag and Baramulla seat said,” Friendly contest means that there will be no cut-throat contest between us on these two seats (Anantnag and Baramulla). If either Congress or NC wins, it’s a win-win situation for both of us.”

Parliamentary elections on the 6 seats of Jammu and Kashmir will be held in 5 phases. In the 2014 election, both Congress and National Conference failed to win even a single seat. However, in the 2017 byelection on the Srinagar seat, Farooq Abdullah defeated PDP’s Nazir Ahmed Khan by more than 10,000 votes.
