Om Birla, a three-time BJP MP, was re-elected as Lok Sabha Speaker on Tuesday, defeating the INDIA bloc’s candidate K Suresh via voice vote in a rare contest. Birla, smiling as he took the Speaker’s chair, was escorted to the podium by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
