Rahul Gandhi appoints Manmohan Singh as patron of the reconstituted Congress’ North-East Co-ordination Committee

In a bid to push the popularity of the Congress in the north-eastern states, party president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday reconstituted the North-East Co-ordination Congress Committee, with former PM Manmohan Singh as its patron.

Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma has been appointed the chairman of the committee tasked with strengthening Congress in the northeast where the BJP is rapidly expanding its electoral presence.

The committee will coordinate the activities of the party in the seven sister states to strengthen its position. All the current and former Congress chief ministers of the seven states have been made advisers. The Congress has been stung by recent losses in the northeast where former party man Himanta Biswa Sarma is helping the BJP win poll after poll. The Congress first lost Assam, then Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. This was followed by the BJPs historic victory trouncing the CPM in Tripura.

BJP chief Amit Shah on Saturday chaired a meeting with the party’s North East leaders in Imphal to chalk out a strategy to “uproot the Congress” from the region.
