Four parties, including Congress, opposed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi bill and walked out of the House.

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill (NCT Act), which extended the powers of Lieutenant Governor in Delhi, was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. There was a lot of uproar in the Rajya Sabha after the introduction of the bill. Four parties, including Congress, opposed the bill and walked out of the House, but it was passed by the Speaker after the bill had a majority in its favor.

Samajwadi Party (SP) MP in Rajya Sabha Vishambhar Prasad Nishad walked out of Parliament against the bill. He demanded that the bill be referred to the Select Committee. He said that this bill is unconstitutional. YSR Congress Party MPs also walked out of the Rajya Sabha.

Earlier, Prasanna Acharya, MP from Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s party Biju Janata Dal (BJD), also walked out of the House to protest against the bill. He said, “Our party has decided that it will not support this bill. This bill reduces the power of the elected government. We are walking out of the house without any fuss.”

Bill passed in Lok Sabha on 22 March

The NCT Act has been passed in the Lok Sabha on 22 March. It was introduced by the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, G Kishan Reddy. This bill extends the rights of the Lieutenant Governor over the elected government. The bill provides that the Delhi government will need to take LG’s opinion before taking any major decision.
