Pragya Thakur faces heat once again, Opposition creates ruckus over her name in Lok Sabha

New Delhi | Controversy seems to erupt everywhere Pragya Thakur, the Bhopal MP, sets her foot on.

In the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha today, Pragya Thakur altered her name while taking an oath as a new Lok Sabha member.

While the traditional format of the oath consists of name, middle name, and the last name. However, Pragya announced her name in Sanskrit, skipping her father’s name.

Pragya Thakur said in Sanskrit, “I, as Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur Swami Pure Chetanand Awadheshand Giri Lok Sabha member …”


MPs objected to her use of the spiritual name as prefix while taking oath as Lok Sabha member.

The Opposition disapproved of this and interrupted her speech frequent times demanding that she says her name as per the norm.

She was interrupted twice later, but after the protem speaker, Dr Virendra Kumar checked her records, she successfully took the oath undisturbed.

Pragya Thakur became the Lok Sabha MP from Bhopal after she won by a margin of more than 3 lakh votes, against veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh.

She has previously faced backlash over her controversial comments.

She is also one of the main accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.
