Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), over the alleged use of taxpayersโ€™ money as โ€œgovernment adsโ€

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), over the alleged use of taxpayersโ€™ money as โ€œgovernment adsโ€.

The BJP spokesperson accused AAP of using taxpayerโ€™s money for its self-promotion and said โ€œAAP doesnโ€™t mean Aam Aadmi Party, it means โ€œAll Advertisement wali Partyโ€. He also said that AAP wasnโ€™t complying with the orders, despite it coming more than five years back.

โ€œA 4200% increase in ad spending was reported in the CAG report. Therefore, this is in violation of the Supreme Court order of 2015, the Delhi High Court order of 2016, and the CCRGA order of 2016. Despite the order coming more than five years ago, AAP was not complying with it,โ€ he said.

โ€œIf it had really done such good work, why did it need to spend so much that too using the taxpayerโ€™s money? For one instance, bio-decomposers which were made at the cost of lakhs, crores were spent on its advertisements. And, how useful they actually turned out against stubble burning in Punjab,โ€ he further said.

The BJP leader said that this type of advertisement spending done on taxpayerโ€™s money must be condemned and paid off.
Earlier today, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered a Rs 97-crore recovery from the AAP-led Delhi government for publishing political advertisements of AAP as โ€œgovernment adsโ€.

The L-G in his Mondayโ€™s orders to the Chief Secretary had directed that all advertisements since September 2016, be also referred to the Content Regulation in Government Advertising (CCRGA) for vetting and ascertaining if they were in consonance with the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court.

Rajya Sabha: Jaishankar To Move Anti-Maritime Piracy Bill Today

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will move the Anti-Maritime Piracy Bill, 2019 in Rajya Sabha today

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will move the Anti-Maritime Piracy Bill, 2019 in Rajya Sabha today.

Earlier on Monday, the Lok Sabha passed the bill that seeks to provide an effective legal instrument to combat piracy not only in territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) but also on the high seas. The Bill defines piracy as any illegal act of violence, detention, or destruction against a ship, aircraft, person or property, for private purposes, by the crew or passengers of a private ship or aircraft.

Speaking in Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Bill, S Jaishankar said โ€œThe official amendment has provided punishment for life. Earlier, there was a provision for death. Now, the provision for death has been amended as per government amendment to punishment   to death or with imprisonment for life, if such a person is committing the act of piracy and causes death or an attempt thereof.โ€

โ€œThe concern that there will be a mandatory death sentence is no longer relevant in view of the government amendment which actually provides for death or life imprisonment depending on the nature of the circumstances,โ€ added the Minister.
The Lok Sabha took up the Bill for consideration on December 7.
Notably, the Bill will empower Indian authorities to deal with piracy on the high seas beyond the exclusive economic zone which is 200 nautical miles from the countryโ€™s coastline.

Jaishankar had earlier informed the Lok Sabha that most of the recommendations of the standing committee have been incorporated in the bill. He said India does not have a specific law or legal provision in the IPC or the CrPC on piracy.
The Minister had said Indiaโ€™s security and economic well-being is inextricably linked to the sea and maritime security is a prerequisite with more than 90 per cent of the countryโ€™s trade with the world taking place through sea routes and more than 80 per cent of hydrocarbon requirements being seaborne.
