Sonbhadra Massacre: Priyanka Gandhi detained by UP Police

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the people who were injured in firing over a land dispute in Sonbhadra on July 17. Currently, Section 144 has been imposed in the state.

 

Lucknow| Congress General Secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi was detained by the UP Police today. Priyanka was on her way to Sonbhadra when the police stopped her. Gandhi along with her supporters was staging a sit-in dharna when the police detained her.

Ruckus in UP Assembly:

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly was adjourned for 40 minutes Friday amid an uproar by the opposition over the law and order situation in the state. The opposition was belligerent as soon as the House met for the day. Members belonging mostly to the Samajwadi Party rushed to the well with placards and raised anti-government slogans. In the din, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath read out a report on the Sonbhadra shootout.

Repeated pleas of Speaker Hridaya Narayan Dixit asking opposition members to resume their seats went unheeded and he adjourned the House for 40 minutes, barely 10 to 15 minutes after the day’s proceedings commenced on a rough note.

Sonbhadra Massacre:

Around 10 people have died and 18 were injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district after a land dispute turned into a violent clash on Wednesday.

The entire dispute is based on a plot of land located in Sonbhadra’s Ghorawal area. The land belonged to an IAS officer who sold it to the village head, Yagya Dutt. Dutt who wanted to take possession of the land reached the spot with his henchmen in 10 to 12 tractors. The village heads henchmen then open fire at the villagers who opposed them from taking over the land.

The deceased and injured all belong to Adivasi tribe Gond. 9 people have died on the spot while one scummed to injuries on Thursday. The police meanwhile have filed a fir against 61 people and have arrested 24 people in the case along with Girish and Vimless, the nephews of the village head.

CM Yogi monitors probe:

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth has instructed state Director General of Police to personally monitor the case and ensure action against the culprits. CM Yogi has directed the Additional Director General (Varanasi zone) and Mirzapur police commissioner to investigate the cause of the clash. CM Yogi has also announced an ex-gratia of 5 lakh rupees to the deceased.
