“This Is Not New,” Says BMC Mayor Kishori Pednekar On BMC’s Changed Testing Strategy

The BMC circular says, “The laboratory has to share the report ONLY with MCGM and MCGM, in turn, shall share it with the patient”

MUMBAI| BMC new circular read the reports of the positive patients will have to be shared with MCGM first and further, MCGM will share it with patients. Responding to this circular BJP leaders alleged ShivSena is violating the rights of the citizens by not providing coronavirus patients with their test results directly on Wednesday.

A BMC circular dated June 13 had said, “No positive test report shall be shared by the laboratory with the patient directly. The laboratory has to share the report ONLY with MCGM and MCGM, in turn, shall share it with the patient.”

The circular also said that the positive report for home tested persons shall be first shared with the BMC.

Reacting to the circular, senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya wrote to BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal stating that the logic given by the BMC for the circular is absurd and a ‘dadagiri’.

Somaiya in his letter wrote, “Is it not nonsense that family members who are at high risk if found positive will not get information till the BMC tells them. At the same time the laboratory will inform the other remaining members that they are negative, but as per BMC diktat, they cannot, will not inform/tell the family that remaining members who are not in a negative category will have to wait?”

Somaiya has also asked why should a person who’s desperate to get the report to be made to wait.

While talking to HW News Network, Kishori Pednekar, the mayor of BMC and ShivSena senior leader said, “When the reports are out, they are primarily reported to BMC further, BMC calls the respective patient to inform them. BMC visits the patient’s place and quarantines the whole family.”

“The doctor reaches the patient to ask for the symptoms as grouped in four types i.e DC1, DC2,… If there are mild symptoms BMC quarantines them. If the patient is found asymptomatic and give us in writing as they are capable of taking care of their own patient at home itself, we allow them to be at home. On a daily bases through WhatsApp video calls, doctor and patient have a conversation. That’s how we treat. This is not new. BMC was functioning the same way since the beginning,” Pednekar said.

Commenting on the BJP actions on BMC circular, the mayor of BMC said, “Opposition’s each and every move is failing. Yesterday they blamed us for hiding numbers. Primarily we never hide the numbers. BJP has no work except sitting at home and tweeting about it. There was miscommunication because of which the numbers were not the actual, we accept it but the blame of hiding the numbers are just not acceptable. There was a delay but we never hide numbers.”

After multiple allegations of hiding COVID-19 deaths, Maharashtra government finally released the reconciled figure of the total number of people killed by the deadly novel coronavirus in the state. After reconciliation, Maharashtra’s death toll has risen sharply.

New data shows in Mumbai, the death toll stands at 2,312 instead of 2,250, the figure put out by the government earlier. The state government has added 862 in the city’s COVID-19 death toll during data reconciliation.

In the rest of Maharashtra, the government increased the death toll by 466. In total, the Maharashtra government has admitted to 1,382 additional deaths in the state, taking the state tally to 5,510.
