TMC Writes To PM Modi Seeking Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s Removal Over Meeting With Suvendu

In the letter, the party raised a concern about Mehta’s position and how his advice on legal matters can leave an impact. “Suvendu Adhikari is accused in various criminal cases of cheating, illegal gratification and bribery”, the letter said.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday seeking the removal of Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General of India over reports suggesting that he met BJP MLA and Narada Scam accused Suvendu Adhikari.

The TMC MPs said that Adhikari is responsible for several “offences being investigated by CBI and ED” and questioned the nature of his recent meeting with Mehta.

In the letter, the party raised a concern about Mehta’s position and how his advice on legal matters can leave an impact. “Suvendu Adhikari is accused in various criminal cases of cheating, illegal gratification and bribery”, the letter said.

It specifically talks about the Narada scam and the Saradha chit fund scam.

SG Tushar Mehta on the other hand denied meeting Suvendu. He told Bar & Bench that Adhikari had indeed come to his residence to meet him.

He was at that time in another meeting in his chamber and his staff, therefore, requested Adhikari to wait and also offered him a cup of tea.

After the meeting got over, Mehta through his PPS conveyed to Adhikari about his inability to meet Adhikari who obliged and left.

Meeting the accused in that case is in direct conflict of interest with the statutory duties of the Solicitor General, the letter said.

Hence, to avoid any doubt in the minds of the public regarding the integrity and neutrality of the office of Solicitor General, necessary steps should be initiated for Tushar Mehta Mehta’s removal from the post, the MPs requested.
