The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, has released its election manifesto for the upcoming national polls, laying out many promises just two days before the first voting phase begins.
Headlining the 10-point manifesto is the party’s vow to abolish the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), discontinue the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and prevent the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if it forms the government at the Centre as part of the INDIA alliance.
The manifesto describes the CAA as a “botched-up” law that will be repealed while the NRC will be stopped entirely. Trinamool leaders have asserted that these moves will be undertaken once the party is part of the ruling coalition at the national level, even though there is no alliance between Trinamool and the Congress-led bloc in West Bengal.
Other critical promises in the manifesto include:
- Increased income and 100-day work guarantee for labourers
- Free housing for all low-income families
- Free ten gas cylinders per year for BPL households
- Doorstep ration delivery for all ration cardholders
- Enhanced allowances for SC/ST education and old-age pensions
- Implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations
- Price stabilization fund for petroleum products
- Apprenticeship program for young graduates and diploma holders Expansion of welfare schemes like Kanyashree across the country
The manifesto will be released in six languages, including Nepali and Santali, catering to West Bengal’s diverse linguistic landscape.
Addressing an election rally in Assam, where Trinamool is contesting, Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the BJP, accusing them of turning the entire country into a “detention camp.” She vowed that if the INDIA alliance comes to power, the CAA and NRC will be scrapped, arguing that there would be no democracy or fair elections if Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns for a third term.
The Trinamool’s ambitious manifesto reflects the party’s efforts to position itself as a critical player in the national political landscape, even as it faces a tough challenge from the BJP in its home state of West Bengal. The promised welfare measures and the firm stand against the CAA and NRC will likely resonate with a significant section of the electorate, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
