Amid the row over loudspeakers in mosques, right wing organizations and political parties have been promoting Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers to oppose the Azaan on loudspeakers. In middle of that, an interesting video has come to the fore, which takes jibe at both groups quarreling over religious hymns being played on loudspeakers.
Posting the video on Twitter, a user wrote: “The sound of Azaan is coming from the loudspeakers of mosques in Banaras. Hanuman Chalisa from the loudspeakers of the temples. To bring the attention of people to the core issues, the Samajwadi Party is playing ‘Mehngai Dayan’ song on loudspeakers. This should be done everywhere.”

The incumbent NDA, which had won the 2014 general election, had a significant part of its campaign targeting the UPA-II over rising inflation. ‘Mehngai Dayan’ (Inflation Witch) is what the BJP had then termed the rising prices of essential products. A song with the same name from the movie Peepli Live had then caught the imagination of the Indian middle class, which wanted to oust the Congress-led government over inflation.
Now that the inflation is spiraling out of control with prices of essential commodities skyrocketing, the Samajwadi Party has chosen to target the BJP with the same song. On April 17, a litre of petrol in Mumbai is being sold at Rs 120.51. Currently, the prices of domestic LPG cylinder in Mumbai stands at Rs 851, up by Rs 56 per cylinder. Prices of vegetables and grocery items have seen massive uptick in the recent times.
