“The local body elections in our country may not be of as much wider interest as the state elections or Lok Sabha elections. But, they too are a package of politics, power and money. Parties that fight vigorously against each other in the state or Loksabha elections, sometimes come together in the local body election. or vice versa. The MCD elections of the National capital are among the most looked after local body elections.
The two rivals in Delhi, BJP and Aam Adami Party are now sparring with each other over the MCD election schedule in Delhi. There are three municipal corporations in Delhi: North and the South Delhi Municipal Corporations with 104 wards. The East Delhi Municipal Corporation has 64 wards. The Elections for Municipal Corporation were to be conducted in April this year. However, three days ago, A Hindustan times report said that the state election commissioner announced a postponement of the election. This was done after receiving a communication from the Central govt. Before receiving the centre’s communication the State election commissioner S K Srivastava was to hold a press conference and announce the poll schedules. However, the press conference was cancelled. Shrivastava said that the dates will be announced in the next few days.
This prompted the question of whether the election commission is working on the direction of the Central govt. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal attacked the Modi govt and ECI for the postponement.
