The commission, which was set up last year is tasked with redrawing boundaries of constituencies in the erstwhile state. The primary aim will be to create constituencies on the basis of “physical features, existing boundaries of administrative units, facilities of communication and public convenience”.
The delimitation commission will be visiting Jammu and Kashmir from July 6 to 9. They will interact with all stakeholders, including political parties, government officials, and public representatives, officials said on Wednesday.

After the meeting, former chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah had told The Indian Express, “The Prime Minister has talked about an early delimitation process. That means they are looking at following that up with Assembly elections.”
The Commission met in Delhi on Wednesday to decide when to hold an all-party meeting with national and local political units with nearly nine months left to complete the exercise, as Jammu and Kashmir gears up for its first assembly election since it became a Union territory, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday. The meet was chaired by delimitation commission chairperson Justice (retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra, a statement by the DC said, Hindustan Times reported.
Modi reportedly told the leaders that he was keen on the delimitation exercise being completed at the earliest so that election could be held soon.
“Our priority is to strengthen grassroots democracy in J&K. Delimitation has to happen at a quick pace so that polls can happen and J&K gets an elected Government that gives strength to J&K’s development trajectory…” Modi said in a tweet after the meeting.
J&K last carried out the delimitation exercise in 1995. After the 2001 census, the assembly passed a law putting delimitation on hold until 2026.
