Saket Gokhale further said details regarding several more tons of unaccounted heroin allegedly seized in other states.
TMC leader Saket Gokhale in a series of tweets accused the centre of a Heroin scam on Tuesday. Claiming the news to be exclusive the TMC leader said, “Curious & baffling case of the unexplained 65,000 kgs of heroin allegedly seized in Sikkim”.
“Union Home Ministry said in Rajya Sabha that total 65,000 kgs of heroin was seized in Sikkim in 2018 & 2020”, the RTI activist turned politician said.
Gokhale further claimed the worth of the Drugs to be ₹4.5 lakh crore. Gokhale additionally attached a copy of the Rajya Sabha response document.
The questions asked in the upper house were:
(a) The details of volumes of heroin and other drugs seized during 2019, 2020, and 2021, year-wise, drug-wise, and State-wise;
(b) the details of cases of seizure of heroin and other drugs being investigated
by NIA; and
(c) the reasons for the increase in the seizure and smuggling of drugs, particularly in
some States like Gujarat and some ports?
The response from the Ministry of Home Affairs was as follows,
ANSWER
(a) to (c): Latest data published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is up to the year 2020. The details of heroin and other drugs seized during 2018, 2019, and 2020, year-wise, drug-wise, and State-wise are in Annexure-I. There is no study of specific reasons for variation in the quantum of seizure of drugs in Gujarat and in some ports. Details of 16 cases of seizure of heroin and other drugs being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are at Annexure
II.
Attaching an RTI on the following tweet Ghokale said, “In the Rajya Sabha, Home Ministry said the number of 65,000 kgs seized was from NCRB data. However, this is where the case takes a bizarre turn. An RTI was filed with Sikkim Police regarding heroin seizures in 2018 and 2020. The response is SHOCKING”.
Gokhale further attached a contradictory response that claimed “No such huge quantity of heroin was seized/ recovered in the state of Sikkim during the year in question.”
In a subsequent tweet, Ghokale raised a question “Where did this 16,000 kgs of heroin in 2018 & 2020 come from?”.

“Home Ministry says Sikkim but Sikkim Police says no such seizure happened in the state by any agency. There have been massive busts of heroin seized from Mundhra Port in Gujarat. And no progress in the case”.
Asking Union Minister for an answer over the 16000 Kg drugs Ghokale said “This is a serious case where a claimed seizure of 16,000 kgs of heroin worth ₹4.5 lakh crore is NOT accounted for. Was this heroin recovered from some powerful people close to Modi govt & shown as “seizure in Sikkim” to avoid implicating them? @AmitShah needs to answer”.
