“Religion Cannot Be Basis Of Citizenship”: Cong MP Manish Tewari

Congress MP Manish Tewari emphasized that, in a nation where secularism is enshrined in the Constitution’s Preamble, religion should not determine citizenship. This comes after a government official mentioned the notification of rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 before the Lok Sabha elections. The CAA grants Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from specific countries till December 31, 2014. The Act triggered protests after Parliament passed it in December 2019.
