Crisis In Pakistan: PM Imran Khan Faces “No Confidence Motion” After Minister’s Senate Defeat

Former PM Yusuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday gave a big blow to Imran Khan govt by defeating the ruling PTI candidate and the country’s finance minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh.

 

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will face a vote of confidence today. He has decided to seek a confidence vote due to the situation arising out of the defeat of a key candidate of his party in the Senate elections. Prior to the trust vote, Imran Khan held a meeting with the leaders of the party and allies in the coalition on Friday. During this time, he appealed to them to hear the voice of their conscience. He also said that some MPs sold themselves for money but that was not right.

Imran shocked by Finance Minister’s defeat in the Senate election

PDM candidate and former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday gave a big blow to Imran Khan by defeating the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate and the country’s finance minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh. After this defeat, Imran Khan accepted the demand for a no-confidence motion by the opposition.

Opposition boycott confidence vote

The opposition coalition announced on Friday that they would boycott the confidence vote, claiming that their candidate’s victory in the Senate election was a ‘no-confidence motion’ against the prime minister. Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman said that no member of the opposition will attend the session of the National Assembly on Saturday in which Prime Minister Khan will seek a vote of confidence. The PDM is an opposition coalition of ten parties.

How many votes does Imran need to save his govt?

Imran Khan needs the support of 171 MPs in the National Assembly as there are currently 340 members out of a total of 342 members in the House and two seats are vacant. Khan’s PTI has 157 MPs while the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has 83 members and the Pakistan Peoples Party has 55 MPs. PTI leaders have said that they are confident that Khan will prove a majority.
