Iran strikes US forces, “slap in the face of Washington” says Iranian leader Ayatollah Khamenei

New Delhi: Iran’s missile strikes targeting US forces in Iraq was a “slap in the face” for Washington, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday.

There is no clarity yet on whether the strikes caused any loss at all — Iranian state TV earlier has claimed around 80 Americans have been killed, but the US has kept silent so far.

AFP reports that the Pentagon is still “working on initial battle damage evaluation”. Other countries like Poland and Norway have said their personnel were not killed.

Iran’s offensive was meant as a repetition for a US drone strike that killed a powerful Iranian commander, Major General Qassem Soleimani, last week.

It has now swear for a “crushing response” if the US retaliates after the strikes.

Khamenei said the US should live from the region. “Military action like this is insufficient. What is important is ending the manipulating presence of America in the region,” Khamenei said.

Iran’s derogatory has deepened the crisis in the entire Middle East, and the Indian government has asked its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iraq.
