Jaishankar-Blinken Discuss Israel-Iran Conflict

EAM S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony J Blinken on Wednesday chaired a meeting at Washington DC and discussed the escalated conflict in the Middle East, including Iranian strikes against Israel, the war in Ukraine and India’s efforts for peace, developments in Bangladesh, where the two countries have differing assessments of the movement that led to a change in the regime, and developments in the Indo-Pacific, including China’s actions on Tuesday.

“Together, the US and India are working to address regional and global challenges. External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and I met to discuss our continued cooperation on the climate crisis and ways we can promote regional security and prosperity,” Blinken said soon after the meeting.

“Aid Israel’s Defense”: Biden

US President Joe Biden has ordered the US military to “aid Israel’s defense” and shoot down any and all Iranian missiles targeting Israel, the White House said. It further said: “President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee in next month’s US presidential election, are both monitoring Iran’s attack on Israel from the White House situation room.”

“President Biden directed the US military to aid Israel’s defense against Iranian attacks and shoot down missiles that are targeting Israel,”  the statement added.

Meanwhile, Responding to the latest barrage of missile strikes from Iran on Tuesday late at night (IST), Guy Nir, spokesperson of the Israeli embassy in India Israel, speaking to NDTV, said: “Defense Forces or IDF is currently assessing the missile attack by Iran today, and an appropriate response will be given to Tehran.”
