Bhilwara’s Model of Containment Is Setting Benchmarks For Others to Follow

Bhilwara, in the last 5 days, has reported no new case of coronavirus and 17 people who tested positive earlier have now been discharged from the hospitals.

Bhilwara| A week ago 12 out of 18 cases of coronavirus infection in Rajasthan were from Bhilwara. The district had 27 cases last week. It was one of the hotspots of coronavirus in the country. Many compared it to Italy, as a doctor from the hospital of Bhilwara tested positive for coronavirus. As surprising as it may sound, Bhilwara, in the last 5 days, has reported no new case of coronavirus and 17 people who tested positive earlier have now been discharged from the hospitals.

Many think that the success achieved by the Bhilwara administration in containing the spread of the virus is because of the strict curfew imposed in Bhilwara. Others say the rigorous testing has helped them identify the threats and quarantine them within time.

Cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba in his recent meetings with state representatives said that the other states could also implement Bhilwara’s model of containment to flatten the curve of coronavirus spread.

Rigorous Screening

After a doctor tested positive in Bhilwara’s Bangar hospital, the state administration has so far tested 22 lakh families from villages, nearly 10 lakh households in the city to contain the spread of the virus.

In Rajasthan, all the government officials such as policemen, healthcare workers, government employees, and others related to the work of screening COVID-19 patients have been working without taking a leave.

After the doctor tested positive in Bangar hospital, police reached out to more than 5000 people who were treated by the doctor. Patients at In-patients Dept. (IPD) & out-patients Dept. (OPD) were also screened by officials. Around 6000 people were kept in isolation within two days after the incident happened. This helped to break the chain of transmission.

Strict Curfew

The Bhilwara administration has imposed a strict curfew in which no movement of people is allowed. All the essential supplies such as food and medicine are delivered by the administration. The district magistrate Rajendra Bhatt told Mint, “No shop, dairy or medical store will be open. If people want something, they will directly call us, whether it is medicine, food or anything else. For this, at least 4-5 control rooms of several departments are being operated and we are fulfilling demands. It is a necessary step to control the outbreak and bring out a total COVID-19-free Bhilwara in the coming days.”

The Bhilwara DM also informed that there have been 25-30 lakhs screenings have been done in the last few days.

After sealing the city, the administration has screened the entire population of the city three times now and anyone having normal symptoms such as fever, cold and cough were checked and asked to quarantine.
