Anil Parab, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, supported the motion and said the house is supreme and the insult of its members cannot be tolerated.
Amid the chaos and shouting in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, a Shiv Sena legislator on Tuesday moved a privilege motion against Republic TV for allegedly insulting the Chief Minister, ministers, and members of the house and conducting a media trial where the anchor, editor, and promoter Arnab Goswami projects himself as judge and gives a ruling. Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik urged the deputy speaker Narhari Zirval that behavior attracts breach of privilege of the members of the state legislature. Sarnaik also demanded the speaker to accept the motion and take necessary action against Republic TV.
Anil Parab, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, supported the motion and said the house is supreme and the insult of its members cannot be tolerated. He also recalled the past instances when the journalists were punished for breach of privilege and argued that Arnab Goswami deserves similar punishment, FPJ reported.
While Parab made his argument on the motion, the opposition members from the BJP raised slogans. Parab asked whether they support Goswami making sweeping and alleged derogatory statements against the members of the legislature. Parab also cited an incident from the past when a police hawaldar was suspended from the service for allegedly insulting the Prime Minister.
However, the opposition continued to raise slogans. Ruling alliance members retorted to the opposition’s slogans.
Parab, undeterred by the noise of opposition, urged the chair to use his discretion and accept the motion. He also demanded stern action, including summoning Goswami in the house. As the committee for discussing the privilege motion does not exist, the chair has a right, Parab added.
In his ruling, speaker Zirval said the decision will be taken according to the stipulated rules on the privilege motion.
