COVID-19 Monitoring Teams to Be Sent To 3 More States After Surge in Cases

Centre had previously sent the 6 teams to Maharashtra, MP, Rajasthan and West Bengal to examine the implementation of lockdown measures.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has sent 4 more inter-ministerial teams to observe the coronavirus situation in Gujarat, Telangana & Tamil Nadu, officials said on Friday.

Home Ministry Joint Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava said, headed by Additional Secretary-level officers, these teams will visit Ahmedabad and Surat (in Gujarat), Hyderabad in Telangana, Tamil Nadu state capital Chennai. These central teams will be in addition to 6 already constituted, she added.

The Union Home Ministry said today in tweets, the situation is “especially serious” in major hotspot districts or emerging hotspots like Ahmedabad and Surat in Gujarat, Thane in Maharashtra, Hyderabad in Telangana and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

5 Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) will be sent to evaluate the condition in the states, issue directions to state governments and submit their report to the central government “in the larger interest of the general public, the home ministry stated.

Teams by Home Ministry were earlier sent to West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

India is 10 days away from ending its Lockdown 2.0 which was imposed to contain the spread of the highly infectious novel coronavirus.

The country is witnessing a steady rise in cases every day by recording more than 1200 cases every day.

The number of COVID-19 cases in India has surged to 23,077, including 718 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said this morning.

1,684 new cases were reported 37 people died in the last 24 hours, according to Union Health Ministry data.

4,748 people who were infected with COVID-19 have been discharged or cured of the virus.

In Maharashtra, 778 new coronavirus cases were reported on Thursday, taking the state’s novel coronavirus tally to 6,427. 14 COVID-19 patients died on Thursday, taking the total to 283.

With 522 more people testing positive, Mumbai alone has 4,025 coronavirus cases now. The rise was the single-biggest surge for the city since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of deaths in the city rose by six to 167, officials said.
