Delhi Riots: Police Books Umar Khalid & Jamia Students Under UAPA

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid has been named as the prime accused in the Delhi Riots case.

New Delhi| Jamia student and Chhatra RJD member Meeran Haider and media coordinator of the Jamia Coordination Committee Safoora Zargar were arrested on charges of conspiracy in connection with the February NE Delhi riots.

Now, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell has booked them under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Umar Khalid, former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader and a local resident of Northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura, Danish, have also been booked under UAPA.

Jamia students Haider and Zargar, arrested for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to incite the communal riots in February, are in judicial custody.

In the FIR, it is claimed that the two, along with their friends plotted the conspiracy of the riot which took place in Delhi on February 23, 24 and 25. The police have alleged that, as part of the duo’s conspiracy, women and children were made to protest on the road.

The FIR specifically mentions that Umar Khalid made “hate speeches and disseminated propaganda” in two places to destabilise the US President Donald Trump’s visit to spread propaganda at the international level about how minorities in India are being persecuted.

The First Information Report was registered on March 6, based on the information provided by Arvind Kumar of the Crime Branch.

Delhi Police has arrested several Muslim activists have in the last few weeks in connection with the violence in North Delhi, which killed at least 53 people and injured close to 200. Many people have recently received notices from the police.
