Election Commission Allows To Hold The Pending Election Of Maharashtra Legislative Council

The election date is not finalized yet but it is supposed to be held after 21 May or before the month-end

 

MUMBAI| On Friday Election Commission gave permission to hold the pending elections before May 27 for Maharashtra Legislative Council. CM Uddhav Thackeray’s Chief Ministry designation was in crisis if the elections did not take place before 29 May.

The election date is not finalized yet but it is supposed to be held after 21 May or before the month-end. The nine legislative council seats fell vacant on April 24.

Due to Coronavirus Pandemic, the elections were on hold. Passing days created uncertainty in Maharashtra politics and well as for Uddhav Thackeray to hold his Chief Minister post as he is not a member of either house.

After EC’s permission some breather and decided to hold the elections. Still, the final date is not officially penned down, it will issue later. However, sources say the commission has decided to hold the elections before May 27.

The Governor on Thursday written to the Election Commission, requesting them to hold the Legislative Council elections.

Two days earlier CM Uddhav Thacker called PM Modi and share word regarding the election. He also explains PM the crisis if the election did not happen and the state will again suffer from political instability.

Uddhav Thackeray must get elected to the legislature by May 28 or else he will cease to be the chief minister of Maharashtra. Currently, the Shiv Sena chief is not a member of either House in Maharashtra.

He has to become a member of either House before May 28 or he will have to step down as the chief minister.

In a Cabinet meeting, the Maharashtra coalition government of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress had decided to nominate Uddhav Thackeray for the Legislative Council.

A group of leaders met the Governor to convey their decision to nominate Uddhav Thackeray through the governor’s quota.
