Former MP Sushmita Dev Quits Congress Party, To Join TMC

Sushmita Dev is in Kolkata to meet with Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

Former Congress MP Sushmita Dev has quit the party and is set to join the Trinamool Congress of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today.

The change in her Twitter bio to “Former Member” of the party was the first sign this morning that she had quit the party. The Assam leader is in Kolkata today to meet with Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee. “She will be the face of the Trinamool in Assam if she joins,” said Trinamool Congress sources.

Sushmita Dev wrote on Sunday to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, offering no reason for quitting her party of three decades but talking about a “new chapter of public service”.

She is the daughter of Assam Congress loyalist and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev, she was the chief of the Congress’s women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress. She had earlier been an MP from Assam, the stronghold of her father – Silchar.

Sushmita Dev was also among the Congress leaders whose Twitter handle was locked over a post shared by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi showing images of the parents of a nine-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in Delhi.

As Rahul Gandhi’s account was blocked, several Congress leaders, including Sushmita Dev, had changed their display picture to the Congress MP’s in solidarity. The account was restored last week, after which the Congress posted “Satyameva Jayate”.
