Govt Will Not Hold Winter Session of Parliament This Year Due To “Covid-19” Situation

Joshi said that the govt has taken a decision to not conduct a winter session. He said the govt held discussion with several party leaders.

New Delhi| There will be no winter session of Parliament this year, the govt has confirmed. In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the govt has said that it will not hold the winter session of the parliament. Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi confirmed the same to Congress’ leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Chowdhury had written a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla requesting to convene parliament session to discuss the farm laws and the ongoing farmers’ protest against it. In reply, Joshi said that the govt has taken a decision to not conduct a winter session. He said the govt held discussion with several party leaders and many were not in favour of the winter session to avoid infection. However, the govt will hold a budget session of the parliament early in January, he said in the reply.

Farmers had demanded a special session of Parliament

Meanwhile, the stalemate between farmers and govt continues. Thousands of more farmers have joined the protesters on the borders of Delhi. Earlier, protesting farmers had demanded that the govt should convene a special session of the parliament and repeal the farm laws.

Interestingly, the three contentious farm laws were passed by the Modi govt during the Monsoon Session of the parliament. The opposition had accused the govt of mulling the three laws through both the houses of Parliament without any discussion or debate.
